Lake Bob Sandlin is located about 100 miles east of Dallas, Texas, 61 miles southwest of Tyler, Texas, and about 43 miles north of Longview, Texas. Pittsburg, Texas, is the nearest town south of Lake Bob Sandlin.
The Piney Woods and Blackland Prairie ecoregions meet at Lake Bob Sandlin in the Post Oak Savannah transition area. Its region is extremely rural with all kinds of wildlife and birds.
The Lake Bob Sandlin State Park has five trails for hiking and msountain biking.
- The Trail Lakeview Loop is an easy 0.6 miles and takes about 30 minutes. This is a good trail for birding along the State Park Cove.
- Brim Pond Trail is 0.3 miles and a moderate 20-minute hike with a steep gully crossing. The pine and buckeye trees, American beautyberry, and fern attracts birds and animals.
- The Homestead Trail is an easy 0.4-mile, 20-minute walk.
- The Dogwood Trail is an easy 1.7-mile trail that leads to Trout Pond. People enjoy taking a fishing pole and a break at Trout Pond. The Dogwood Cutoff leads off of Dogwood Trail, which is an easy 3.0-mile trail.
- Lake Bob Sandlin State Park Ranger Programs offer tours and interpretive nature walks on most weekends.

The Lake Bob Sandlin State Park has tent and RV sites with amenities and swim areas. There are seven RV parks around Lake Bob Sandlin with various features and amenities, but most have boat ramps and fishing piers. There are a few stores around the lake.
